Cheboksary (Shupashkar in the Chuvash language) is the capital of the Chuvash Republic, its administrative, economic and cultural center.

Cheboksary was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1469. In 1555 Cheboksary was announced as a Russian military town, which had a fortress and a trading quarter.
